What do I see for my flight?
How you change or cancel a flight depends on the airline. Open your trip under "Bookings & Tickets" and look at "Actions" next to the flight:
| What you see | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Two buttons: "Rebook" and "Cancel" (for many flights) | Cancel a flight or Rebook a flight |
| "Rebook or cancel?" with a "Request" button (for some airlines, for example Ryanair) | Rebook or cancel with a request |
| No button | Why is the button missing? |
Whether and how much is refunded depends on the airline's fare conditions. You find them when you select the flight and in your booking under "Ticket & Fare Conditions".
Cancel a flight
Open your trip and click "Cancel" next to the flight. The "Cancel your flight" page opens.
Click "Check cancellation options". We now ask the airline whether cancellation is possible and how much will be refunded.
Review the refund. Depending on what the airline reports, you see the "Booking price", the "Cancellation fee", the "Non-refundable fare" and the "Refundable amount".
Click "Cancel booking & refund". The flight is cancelled and the refundable amount goes back to your original payment method.
A cancellation is final and can't be undone. For a roundtrip, the entire flight is always cancelled.
The refund is issued by the airline and can take up to 14 days. Some airlines, for example some low-cost carriers, don't report any amounts. You then see fewer rows than in the example above.
If the fare is non-refundable or the ticket wasn't cancelled in time, we take care of refunding unused taxes and fees. More in the article Tax refund for flight tickets.
Rebook a flight
Click "Rebook" next to the flight. For Lufthansa Group flights, you search for alternatives yourself, see the price up front and confirm the rebooking. For all other flights, you send a request to our support team, who take care of it personally.
All steps are in the article Rebook a flight yourself.
Rebook or cancel with a request
For some airlines you see "Rebook or cancel?" instead of the two buttons.
Click "Request". The "Change" page opens.
-
Choose what you want:
- "I want to rebook on another flight". Then state which flight you want to rebook and which new flight itinerary you would like, for example with airports, date and time.
- "I just want to cancel and refund this flight (fees by the airline may apply)".
Click "Submit change".
Your request goes to our support team. On your trip you see the status: "Change/ Cancellation request status: with our support team".
If a flight can't be cancelled, the page asks whether you would like to request a tax refund. More in the article Tax refund for flight tickets.
What happens afterwards?
You see the status directly at the service. A rebooked or cancelled flight carries the note "This service was rebooked/cancelled on …". Use "Expand cancelled items" to display it again.
Frequently asked questions
Can I cancel only the outbound or only the return flight? No, for most airlines the entire flight is cancelled. If you only want to change part of it, please ask our support team. When rebooking, you can choose the outbound flight, the return flight or both (see Rebook a flight yourself).
Why don't I see a button to rebook or cancel? Usually the flight has already been rebooked or cancelled, a request is already in progress, or you are not allowed to cancel the booking. For Lufthansa Group flights, the buttons are no longer available once the trip has started. In these cases, please contact our support team.
Why don't I see any amounts when cancelling? Not every airline reports amounts in advance. Cancelling is still possible. You find the fare conditions under "Ticket & Fare Conditions".
Can I take my seat or baggage over to the new booking? When rebooking, a seat and baggage added after booking are not carried over automatically. More in the article Rebook a flight yourself.
What applies to train, hotel and rental car? These bookings can't be rebooked, only cancelled and booked again. See Cancel a train trip, Cancel a hotel booking and Cancel a rental car booking.
