What is a seat reservation?
A seat reservation gets you a fixed seat on the train in addition to your Deutsche Bahn ticket. You book it at checkout and pick your seat from a seat map.

Reserving a seat, step by step
- Pick your connection and go to checkout.
- Below your journey, switch on "With seat reservation". The reservation price is shown next to it.
- Click "Select a seat" for your train.
- In the seat map, pick the coach and an available seat.
- Click "Save and continue".
- Your seat is shown at checkout. Complete the booking as usual.
If your fare already includes a seat reservation, it is added automatically.
If you want a reservation but don't pick a seat in the seat map, the software books an available seat for you.
The seat map
The seat map shows all coaches of the train at the top and the seats of the selected coach below.

| Not reservable | Can't be reserved, for example in a coach of the other class |
If several people are travelling, first pick the person under "Passengers", then their seat.
Changing your seat
A booked seat cannot be exchanged. Instead, you book a new one. See How do I change my Deutsche Bahn seat? for how this works.
Seat preferences under User Account > Preferences are no longer used for train bookings.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I don't pick a seat in the seat map? If "With seat reservation" is switched on, the software books an available seat for you.
Why can't I click some seats? These seats are taken or not reservable, for example in a coach of the other class.
Can I book only a seat without a ticket? Yes, via "Seat only" in the search (see the info at the top).
Can I change my seat later? Not exchange it, but you can book a new one (see "Changing your seat").
